Why Ground Penetrating Radar?
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment comes in many configurations and antenna frequencies. Most utility locates are performed at frequencies between 250 and 500 MHz while concrete studies are performed at frequencies of 1 GHz and higher. Utility Specialists Technicians use GPR and Electromagnetic Equipment when performing a site survey. Pipe and cable diameter along with the depth play a key role in how well GPR works. Under normal conditions .5 inch pipe or cable can be seen as deep as 1 foot, and a 2 inch pipe or cable 4 feet deep, etc.. Soil conductivity is also key. Wet clay and shale are high conductivity soils and are more difficult to work with than low conductivity soils such as dry and sandy soils. GPR allows technicians to locate utilities that several years ago were undetectable such as plastic pipe, etc. GPR enables us to locate underground soil disturbances, trenching, voids and structures. Using GPR minimizes the worry of missing objects in your survey area. The ability of GPR to quickly and accurately locate utilities helps to maintain existing utilities and identify potentially hazardous areas before damage occurs. GPR can also be used to map areas where utility locations were previously unknown. |
